MIRA Art Fair / Manuela Rayo

From 12 to 15 November, the Maison de l’Amérique Latine in Paris will host the third edition of the MIRA Art Fair — a celebration of contemporary Latin American art. Our head of Art Banking Services, Laurent Issaurat, explored this effervescent art scene with founder Manuela Rayo.
Why did you create MIRA Art Fair?

My work has taken me to all the major Parisian art fairs over the years. I noticed that while there was tremendous public interest in foreign cultures, it gravitated towards Africa and Asia, with Latin America barely featuring. Yet there are more and more Latin American artists in France and strong ties between the two cultures.

The inaugural MIRA Art Fair in 2024 addressed that gap, and I’ve been collaborating with renowned institutions like the Centre Pompidou, the Louvre and Galleria Continua since then.

How would you describe the Latin American scene as represented by the fair?

From Mexico to Patagonia, there are myriad cultural identities — which is what makes this art scene so rich and vibrant! Then there are shared features: language, an inclination for materials and colour, and Latin American gusto.

Politics is also very present; art was created in opposition to the various dictatorships on the continent, and today satire and humour in art remain very political.

How do you choose the participating galleries?

The fair needs to be intimate so that collectors, gallery owners and artists alike can connect meaningfully. That is why I have always limited the number of galleries to twenty. It’s a real challenge for our selection committee, which includes representatives of our partner institutions and international galleries. This summer it met to review applications from galleries in eleven different countries.

There will be three galleries from Mexico, which will be headlining this year’s edition as part of national celebrations to mark two hundred years of diplomatic ties between France and Mexico.

Other than its intimate side, what makes MIRA Art Fair unique?

Everything is designed to build connection. In parallel with our performance programme at Maison de l’Amérique Latine, where the public can interact with artists, we have tours and off-site social events lined up, catering to groups from London to Madrid and Houston.

As MIRA Art Fair celebrates its third year, how do you envision future editions?

My hope is that it becomes Europe’s leading forum for Latin American art, while staying true to its core as an intimate and bespoke art fair.

Kenia Almaraz Murillo

As a leading figure in the contemporary Latin American art scene, Kenia Almaraz Murillo develops a body of work that explores cultural narratives, identities, and social dynamics. Featured notably at the MIRA Art Fair, her artistic practice reflects a committed and distinctly contemporary approach.
