Carte blanche to Boris Eldagsen

In April 2023, German photographer Boris Eldagsen made a name for himself worldwide with an image that wasn’t actually real! Pseudomnesia: The Electrician was submitted to the Sony World Photography Awards, and went on to win in the Creativity category. The image, in black and white, depicts two women and appears to date from the 1940s.

The artist then caused a stir by refusing the award, revealing that he had created the image with AI. On his blog he wrote, “I wanted to do a test, to see if the world of photography was ready to handle the impact of AI on international artistic competitions, and obviously it wasn’t.” With his approach, Boris Eldagsen wanted to open up the debate on the status of images, and beyond that on the importance of remaining vigilant when it comes to content produced by AI.
